Consumed by Choice- 016
I walked into the drugstore and instead of feeling empowered by options; I felt consumed by choice. After staring off into the sea of makeup primer, I became less sure of which to choose. There were different brands, of course, that all pretty much do the same thing. It dawned on me that choice is an illusion that distracts us from our own rational sense of what is enough. We are led to believe that fulfillment lies in that next purchase but this is just not the case. Having more is supposed to mean security but we often end up feeling more trapped then free. What I propose is that many of us end up a hazard in our own living spaces; being overrun by things that mostly give us the appearance of more abundance than we really have. It becomes apparent that consumerism diminishes our sense of who we are. Identities are being taken over by the need to acquire things; whether it’s houses, cars or clothing. As a result; we are being eroded by the onslaught of materiality.
