The author appears to be suffering from post partum depression or a nervous condition; offering a review of how women’s mental health was treated during the Victorian era. The author is confined to a nursery by her husband John who is a physician that believes sensory deprivation will do his wife some good. The irony is that it is the wallpaper that drives the author crazy but John believes that his wife has a susceptibility to this ailment and that the walls “sickly sulfur tint” was just getting the better of her. The feminist under tones place the author under the confines or watchful eye of a husband who operates under the guise of being the devoted spouse. She feels that the husband and his sister (Jenny) conspire to keep her confined and the only way that she can be free is with bare walls. They represent the resistance she is under, although she peels off the wallpaper and takes back some of her agency.
